I've started to hear predictions that Hurricane Irma will become a category 5 hurricane and travel up the East Coast. There is certainly a lot of uncertainty as the models aren't very good at predicting the path more than three to four days out. Talk of a category 5 hurricane definitely got my attention.

Has anyone else heard this prediction of an East Coast impact? I was just on the hurricane center site for NOAA and they don't have predictions beyond three days which puts it in the Caribbean. I will certainly be keeping an eye on this one.

The map below is the potential long-range (15 day) forecast.

This is the latest 5-day forecast map from the Weather Channel. Irma is moving really slowly.

Trevor,

That GEFS graphic looks bad, but I think the European model is considered more accurate and it shows a much better chance for Hurricane Irma to head East out to sea and avoid an East Coast landfall altogether. Fingers are crossed.

Here's the latest long-range forecast from the Weather Channel. People in Florida must be getting nervous. I am and I don't even live there.

I lived in the Tampa / St. Pete area of Florida for about 10 years in the mid-1990's. If a hurricane was to hit South Tampa, it would be a disaster. It's a very wealthy, but very low-lying area of the city, right on Tampa Bay. My wife's parents live in Lakeland, Florida, about an hour west of Orlando. There are a lot of people watching this hurricane very closely from Florida to Cape Cod.

I watched the local news tonight and there is a possibility that Savannah and Hilton Head could take a direct hit from hurricane Irma. How long ago was Matthew? Less than a year? Please stay safe if you are on the island this week.
